Developing a Sight Word Bank

Hello Families,
Coming to an iBag near you...a package of sight words for you to work on with your budding reader.

SK students are involved in an individualized reading program and bring home books every week to read and enjoy with an adult.  We now have a good routine established.  JK students are being read to nightly at home in addition to the literacy-rich environment we provide here at school.  At this point we would like to send home additional nightly 'homework' to help develop your child's reading skills.

  • Dolch Words - a list of the most frequent words in our language. The list of 220 words make up between 50 - 70% of basic text.  The words are divided into five lists ranging from Pre-Primer to Grade 3.  We are sending home the Pre-Primer and Primer lists.
  • Dolch Nouns - a list of 95 most common nouns
  • Letter Formation Guide

Assessing your child's sight word bank is one assessment we can do to establish reading readiness.  Once reading, a robust sight-word bank leads to increased reading fluency, comprehension and confidence.  We encourage you to develop a nightly at-home routine that tackles a few words a week.  The goal is for your child to easily identify 'by sight or memory' the words you have selected.  Build on success and avoid overwhelming your child with taking on too many words at once. Two to three words a week is manageable for most students; add on as you wish.  Consider mixing up the order of the words as you practice and read them as some children can easily memorize the order of the words rather than memorizing the word to recall at random.  Once your child has mastered the two lists you are welcome to trade them in for the Grade 1 list!

Some parents have asked for a list of basic spelling words.  That will come shortly.
My next post will provide more information on Dolch Words.  Stay tuned...

Happy Reading!
