Project Wild Thing

Just last week I had the opportunity to be part of a screening of a documentary film titled Project Wild Thing. It was hosted by the York Region Nature Collaborative of which I am a part.  I wanted to share the Project Wild Thing link. The film was amazing.  It is available for viewing on NETFLIX if you are a subscriber. It definitely supports my philosophy on the need to connect students with nature. Here's an excerpt about the film from their website.

Project Wild Thing is a film led movement to get more kids (and their folks!) outside and reconnecting with nature. The film is an ambitious, feature-length documentary that takes a funny and revealing look at a complex issue, the increasingly disparate connection between children and nature.

Highview Holiday Concert

Highview will be hosting a holiday concert on Thursday December 11.  The Kindergarten students are NOT be performing.  However, this doesn't mean you cannot go.  It is a fun night out and the Kindergarteners love to see their older siblings and friends and neighbours perform.  This concert will be showcasing the primary choir and the intermediate bands conducted by Mrs. Walker.

The gift baskets will be on display in the main hallway that evening.  A silent auction will be held as a fundraiser for Highview students.  At the end of intermission, the auction will be shut down and winners will be announced at the end of the show.

Roots of Empathy Release Form

Mrs. Carroll has asked that we send home the official Roots of Empathy Photo/Video and Artwork/Writing Release Form for Children's Parents or Guardians.  During the ROE program we take a lot of pictures of the students interacting with the baby and mother.  For our purposes of this blog, we take only non-identifying pictures.  We do, however, collect all other photos in a file which we will use to create a keepsake book at the end of the year for our baby and her mother.  On occasion the ROE program may wish to use one of our photos as promotional material.  They may also wish to use a piece of student artwork for the same purpose.  This form (sent home today) covers these two instances.  Please return the completed form by the end of the week.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.  This Thursday we have our PreVisit and next Thursday we will be welcoming Baby Maya back into the classroom. Library News

Mrs. Nelson wanted us to know that the library scanner is currently out of commission.  A replacement scanner has been ordered but has not yet arrived.  Without the scanner, she is unable to process (sign-in/sign-out) books.  It is very likely that Monday's Library period will just involve storytime.  Thank you for your understanding!

The Volcano

Our little paleontologists have been busy co-constructing a volcano as part of our inquiry on Dinosaurs. We've been learning about the theories scientists have as to why the dinosaurs became extinct.  Some theories suggest a volcano.   Mrs. Crossley started us off with a chicken-wire form and last week we covered it with paper mache.  This week we painted, added the lava and started to create the mini dinosaurs and habitat around it.  We are very proud of our work.
