Busy Day

We had such a busy and fun day! We started off the day with a performance from our jazz band and the Williams High school jazz band. They were fantastic. Once they finished performing the JK/SK's got a chance to practice their songs for Arts Night in front of the school. They did a great job.

We are beginning a new unit on pond study. Today we took a walk in the forest to visit our pond. The students had a great time seeing the new leaves budding and all the changes after the winter. We were on the lookout for any animals emerging from hibernation, unfortunately 24 student don't walk with the softest feet:). Students made it to the pond and were excited to see the water was no longer frozen and the ducks were back swimming.

Fine Arts Night

The email from the school about Fine Arts Night says that the Kindergarten students should meet in the pod at 6:45.  We will meet in the pod at 7:05 and then walk across the hall to the gym.  Teachers will not be supervising students.  Parents must stay with their child.  Please arrive early (6:30) so that you have time to enjoy the artwork around the whole school, then come to the pod for 7:05.

Scientists in the class

Scientist Karen visited our classroom today and set up 5 really cool Bee activity centres to help the students learn about 'the Bee' and how important they are to the environment.  The students looked through microscopes at the bee and learned about the queen bee, worker bees and drones.  The job of the queen is to lay eggs (1000 a day), the drones (male bees) mate with the queen and the worker bees protect the hive, feed the baby bees, fan the hive, repair the hive, clean the hive and gather nectar.  Worker bees are female.

Honey tasting centre

Bees make honey.  The flavour depends on the region and time of year (which flowers are in bloom).  The students smelled and tasted 4 different kinds:  clover, alfalfa, buckwheat and wildflower.

Bee Making Centre
The bee has 2 antennae, 3 body parts, 4 wings, 5 eyes, 6 legs.  The children made puppets using all the correct number of body parts.  Then, they sorted a sack full of animals into insects and not insects.

The Life cycle of the Bee
The life cycle of the bee has 4 steps:  egg, larvae, pupa and adult.

The Drama Centre
Bees have a special dance they do to tell other bees where the pollen and nectar is and how far away it is.

Our little scientists at work looking at the many different sections of the bee up close.

Students learnt how bees pollinate and cross pollinate different types of flowers.

Sunny Weather

We are loving the sunny weather, but with sun we need to keep ourselves protected. Please make sure that students have a sun hat and if they want sunglasses. On days that are necessary please put sunscreen on your son/daughter before school. We ask that you do not send sun screen with them. If special circumstances exist please let me know by note or email and we can accommodate accordingly.

Thanks so much

The Kindergartens Will Be Performing

On Thursday, April 30 Highview will be hosting an Arts Night. The school will be transformed into a large art gallery. Each class will be displaying art all around the school. Special art has been created for parents and students to see and enjoy. Another exciting part of the evening is musical performances by some classes and clubs. The Kindergartens are part of this. We will be performing songs in the gym that we have been learning in Music. The night runs from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Once the schedule has been finalized for the gym performances I will let you know. We are looking forward to a fun and memorable night. See you then.

Scientists in the Classroom

Hi Everyone,

On Thursday April 23 the MacWandson's will be participating in Buzz About Bees. We are very excited to have our scientist back in the school. We are looking for some parent volunteers to help with the activities that will be happening in the class that day. We will need volunteers from 8:30am until around 11:30am.  If you are interested in helping please send me a note or a quick email letting me know. We appreciate your help and look forward to seeing you.

Beginning our day

Each morning students come into our room and begin working on bell work. This is a literacy activity that they work on to promote more reading and writing. Students have been doing this very independently and seem to enjoy each day's new challenge.

Learning about word families

This week we have been learning about the (at) word family. Our students have been working on adding letters to the beginning of the word (at) to come up with new words. We have begun creating funny sentences out of our new words. Both the SK's and JK's have been writing these new sentences on the chart paper. Each of our students knows that we start our sentence with an uppercase letter and end the sentence with a period. We are very proud of them. Try some at home if you get a chance.

School Day Up Date

Hi Everyone,

Students are bringing toys to school to play with at recess. We are asking that you keep all home toys at home. This will ensure that nothing gets taken or broken. Also please make sure that you are sending a water bottle with your son/daughter each day. We are finding that students are much more active and very thirsty.

Thanks

Reading books

Hi Everyone,

We have been doing so many things this week that we are a bit behind with our reading program. We will be catching up as of tomorrow and everything will be back to normal. Thanks for your understanding.

Taste of Spring

We have finally had some wonderful weather and are beginning to believe it's spring.

All About Me

Hi Everyone,

We are staring a unit all about your son and daughter. We are focusing on things that make all of us unique. For one of the activities we would like to make a scrapbook page about each student. We are asking that you send in a few pictures of your son/daughter that can be cut or changed to add to the scrapbook. Please also send anything else that would show things that your son/daughter enjoys. This could be a magazine cut out, sticker of a favourite character,  or images that would represent them.  If you could please send this in by next Monday so we can get started that would be very helpful.

Thanks for your participation!
